Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGD)
What Are They?
A livestock guardian dog (LGD) is a dog bred for the purpose of protecting livestock from predators. They live with and consider themselves as a member of the flock or herd. They don't move a herd, instead, they blend in with the herd and watch for the presence of intruders. They will confront intruders with vocal intimidation, barking, and aggressive behavior. They will attack if they can't drive the predator away.

Puppies should be introduced to the animals they are to protect at a very young age. They need to be watched and taught correct actions toward the animals they are guarding. Some is instinctual, but they need to learn manners from humans or an older dog. They are not fully developed and dependable until they are two years old, so you need to be patient with them and give them time to learn. Having an older, well trained dog teach a young pup is a big positive in handling these dogs!

LGDs tend to work cooperatively, as a group taking on various roles within the group. A good dog will be trustworthy, attentive, and protective. They stay with their charges; they are not aggressive towards them; they are ever vigilant (even when they are resting); and they will drive away anything that is a threat. Some will patrol the edge of the flock or the boundaries of the property, keeping would be predators at a safe distance.

These dogs are usually large (100 lbs or over), independent, and protective. As such, they have a mind of their own, can be stubborn, and need a strong hand to guide them. They are gentle giants and can be taught to protect anything, including children if introduced to a family as a pup. They will be as protective to their family as to their flock.

Let us introduce you to our family. They guard chickens and goats. Bailey has been the momma to all our pups so far. Max is our male and the daddy of our pups.
